ICYMI: PyTorch Foundation Expanded to an Umbrella Foundation

In May, PyTorch Foundation expanded into an umbrella foundation, creating a broader home for high-value, trusted open source AI projects that support the full AI lifecycle—from training and inference to domain-specific applications.

Two new projects, vLLM and DeepSpeed, were officially accepted into the foundation.

Introducing the PyTorch Ecosystem Working Group and Project Spotlights

The PyTorch Foundation launched a working group to highlight mature, high-quality open source projects that extend or build on PyTorch. With 21 submissions so far and more under review, this effort streamlines project evaluation and supports ecosystem growth.

PyTorch Ambassador Program

The PyTorch Foundation launched the PyTorch Ambassador Program to recognize contributors who advocate for, educate about, and support the PyTorch community.

Nominations for the first cohort closed on June 7. We are grateful to have received 259 applications.

A new report from LF Research, commissioned by Meta, explores the value of open source AI and highlights trends relevant to the PyTorch ecosystem, including widespread adoption and startup growth.
The report notes: “When Meta donated the machine learning library PyTorch to the Linux Foundation, there was a notable increase in corporate contributions, especially from chip manufacturers.”
